As smart meter rollouts continue globally, consumers, design engineers, and utilities discuss how the smart grid will transform the entire energy industry. Dille: I would say my concern is that demand response has had such a strong regulatory tailwind that has really created and enabled demand response to become a material participant in the electricity market. Hardware techniques monitor physical security, enabling responses to tamper events. Smart meters Distributed resources, such as electric vehicles and various forms of solar and wind generation, are maximizing renewable resources and leveraging the available resources to accommodate peak demand. More utilities are piloting smart grid-enabled demand response programs, but customer engagement is crucial to success. And then the last space is more on the demand side of the equation and is related to the smart grid — they are really demand response and energy efficiency companies, whether it is EnerNOC (ENOC) or Comverge (COMV). EnerNOC, for instance, has acquired a series of businesses including building energy efficiency software and wireless controls — markets potentially much bigger than demand response. It offers a whole host of smart grid-enabled services, such as demand response, energy efficiency, energy procurement and carbon management applications. GRIDresponse improves deployment and operation of large- and small-scale demand response assets. While it has slightly fewer megawatts under management than EnerNOC, it's also pursuing different opportunities, most recently with its Apollo platform, which enables DR over smart meters as well as its traditional pager networks. The tantalizing possibility of virtual power plants also exists.
